Las Cuatro Milpas: Authentic Mexican Home Cooking Legend

San Diego's beloved family-run gem serving traditional tamales and tacos since 1933. Historic flavors that keep lines out the door in Barrio Logan.

About Us

Step into a piece of San Diego history at Las Cuatro Milpas, where three generations have perfected the art of home-cooked Mexican comfort food since 1933. Tucked in the heart of Barrio Logan at 1985 National Ave, this unpretentious spot isn't about fancy plates or Instagram aesthetics—it's about soul-satisfying flavors that taste like abuela's kitchen.

The air hums with the sizzle of fresh masa on the comal, filling the space with intoxicating aromas of roasted green chiles, slow-simmered beans, and carnitas crisping to golden perfection. Expect tamales so steamy and tender they melt in your mouth, tacos bursting with juicy pork and handmade tortillas, and rice and beans that are the stuff of legends. With a stellar 4.6-star rating from over 4,400 devoted fans, it's no wonder lines snake out the door daily.

This family legacy—started by the late Petra Gonzalez and carried on by her daughters—embodies true Mexican tradition. No frills, just pure, affordable deliciousness that locals and visitors crave. But time is precious: this icon is set to close its doors at year's end, making every visit a must. Come hungry, leave happy, and make memories at San Diego's most cherished taqueria.

What We Offer

Dive into street-style tacos loaded with carnitas, adobada, or buche on warm corn tortillas, topped with diced onion, cilantro, and fiery salsa.

Don't miss the rice and beans combo: fluffy Mexican rice infused with tomato and chicken broth, paired with creamy refried beans that steal the show. Freshly squeezed aguas frescas—horchata, jamaica, or pineapple—quench your thirst with natural sweetness. Family meals feed four with ease, perfect for sharing the love at home.

Cash-only, counter service keeps it quick and affordable (meals under $10!). Open daily for lunch and early dinner, we serve up generous portions that satisfy the soul. It's simple, hearty, and irresistibly real—exactly what Mexican food should be.

"Sadly this is the last time we will be eating here with them closing at the end of the year. Food has always been good. Nothing fancy just good home cooked traditional Mexican food at a very reasonable price. Today I decided to go with the beans, rice, tamale and fresh made tortillas ($7) and two tacos ($7). Not sure where else in San Diego you can get that kind of meal for $14. Everything was on point as usual and the ladies serving everything up to us were happy and welcoming to everyone. Farewell my friends! You will be miss for sure. 🙏🏻😢🙌🏻"

"Every time I have been here has been absolutely Wonderful! The food, Ambiance, historical setting and service have been outstanding! When you arrive there is usually a line running out of the front entrance. 1-Get in line. 2-Order your food and ask for the food to go or for eating at the restaurant. 3-Wait at the counter for your food. 4-Pay or your food. 5- leave a tip for the hard working individuals employed at this establishment. 6- if you are eating in, it is all open seating. Find an open space which suits your needs Enjoy! Ask for the Chorizo and egg bowl (which is mixed with fresh pinto beans and red rice! So very yummy! Also order the tacos de pollo (chicken tacos). The tacos are filled with shredded chicken with a few diced potatos, shredded iceburg lettuce, crema and cotija cheese. The chicken filling is expertly seasoned by an Abuelita who knows what she is doing!! The Chorizo bowls come with a red salsa and freshly made flour tortillas. Outs no tanding! Oh..also pick up a dozen (or two) of freshly made flour tortillas to take home."

"Took a ride down to San Diego, for what I expected to be some fantastic tacos. The service was impeccable, as the ladies working the orders counter treated you like family. However, the food itself was less than impressive. Hard shell tacos were not crispy nor hot. Beef inside was dry. Lastly, it feels like you’re dining on top of a tortilla “sweat shop”, as the ladies hustle all around you, trying to quickly bust out fresh tortillas."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"This place is incredibly good! We had one of the best meals in while visiting San Diego. We took home plenty of food and enjoyed it for nearly three days. Absolutely loved the tamales, hand made tortillas and rolled tacos. The beans and chorizo were delicious. Just one caution: they only take cash. Make sure you bring enough cash to cover your meal. Will 💯 return and enjoy another meal here!"
